Pupuh in Sundanese: a media to express feelings and thoughts via language


Pupuh is a traditional poetry in Sundanese (also occur in Javanese that called macapat), which has clear sentence pattern (number of consonant and vocal).  This poetry was build before the era of new poetry pattern developed.  In fact, this poetry was used since long time ago to express feelings and thoughts.  There are 17 pupuh patterns that expressed different kind of feeling, thoughts and experiences that would like to tell:  

  1. Asmarandana, expressed by somebody who is in love or having loving feeling.
  2. Balakbak, expressed by somebody to made a joke/funny story.
  3. Dangdanggula, expressed by somebody with peaceful feeling.
  4. Durma, expressed by somebody who is in anger. 
  5. Gambuh, expressed by somebody who is in great sadness. 
  6. Gurisa, expressed by a dreamer who is currently thinking of something that might not be happened.
  7. Jurudemung, expressed by somebody who has confused thoughts and feeling.
  8. Kinanti, expressed by somebody who has unhappy feelings because s/he has to wait for something that absurd.
  9. Lambang, expressed by somebody who has lots things in his/her mind and try to cheer her/himself.
  10. Magatru, expressed by somebody who is sad because her/his feeling was hurt by somebody.
  11. Maskumambang, expressed by somebody who has deeply sad feelings. 
  12. Mijil, expressed by somebody who has miserable feeling but has big hope that s/he will face better future.
  13. Pangkur, expressed by somebody who is not happy because she/he has lots of things to do and heavy duty to accomplish. 
  14. Pucung, expressed by somebody who is angry of himself/herself or having regretful thoughts.
  15. Sinom, expressed by somebody who is happy. 
  16. Wirangrong, expressed by somebody who is shame of his/her own attitude.
  17. Ladrang, expressed by somebody who make sinistic joke.
