Smallworldsmallband is a band from Phnom Penh.  In the intro to this performance video you can hear the lead singer LomorKesor Rithy speaking in Phnom Penh dialect!  It’s also a great contemporary song written and sung in the Khmer language.

In a lot of formal media, the speakers use Central Khmer- a “neutral” official language.  The different dialects of Khmer can have phonology and lexical use that varies from Central Khmer.  Therefore, until recently, we have not always been able to hear Phnom Penh dialect in media- or other commonly-used Khmer dialects, for that matter.
