Gara'oana Pinuna Vanuananai "The Eel in Pinu Village"

This legend was told to me by my grandmother.

Long ago Pinu village was located by the river. An eel entered the village through the river and destroyed their gardens and food.
A meeting was called and the whole village got together and began discussing.
“Let’s find it and kill it!” they said.
At night the people of the village would hide in the gardens and wait until they captured it.
They brought the eel into the village and called everyone together.
“Come let’s kill this thing or what shall we do with it?”
They said, “Let’s kill it and eat it!”
An old man with his grandson were there at the time. They saw what was happening and the old man told his grandson, “this isn’t an eel. It’s something else. Let’s sleep early tonight so if they bring our share, we won’t eat it”.
So at night the old man and his grandson slept early. They whole village ate the eel. In the morning when the old man and his grandson woke up, everyone had died.
The old man and his grandson packed their belongings and moved to where Pinu village is today.
