Cultural significance:
Farming is a difficult task because everything is done by hand or sometimes with a draft animal if the farmland is relatively flat. But on the hillsides, all is done by hand: clearing, planting, cultivating and protecting against birds and animals. Rice is the major food crop; the one that sustains life. Above all else, when the work is done and the crop has matured, there is a joyful expectation for the major cultural event: the harvest.
