Newari (Luniva)

लसकुस!   |   Lasakusa!   |   Welcome!

The Newars are the indigenous people of Kathmandu Valley (modern day capital city of Nepal). We represent approximately 5% of the population of 2.8 Million in Nepal ( as of 2014). At present, the Newar people have spread throughout the nation, however, they are mostly concentrated in the capital city of Kathmandu. Although the Newars are considered an ethnic minority, the cultures, languages and customs of the Newar people have a heavy and widespread influence. They have been recognized for their contributions to art, sculpture, architecture, culture, literature, music, trade, agriculture and (most importantly) cuisine!
Despite the high level of development, Newar culture and language are both under threat today.
