Bangladesh is Located in
the north-eastern part
of South Asia. The majestic Himalayas stand some
distance to the north,
while in the south lays the Bay of Bengal. There is West Bengal border on the
west and in the east lie the hilly and forested
regions of Tripura, Mizoram (India) and Myanmar. These
picturesque geographical
boundaries frame a low lying plain of about 1,47,570 square kilometer
criss-crossed by innumerable rivers and streams.
Bangladesh is the 7th
most populous nation in the
world with 160 million people. Excluding a handful of city-states
and small countries such as Malta,
it has the highest
population density in the world. Ninety eight percent of the
population
is the Bengali people.
The major religion practiced in
Bangladesh is Islam.
Bangladesh is a parliamentary
democracy.[29]
Direct elections in which all citizens,
aged 18 or over, can vote are held every five years
for the unicameral
parliament
known as Jatiya Sangsad.
The official
and most widely used language in Bangladesh, as in West Bengal,
is Bengali
or “Bangla”, an Indo-Aryan
language of Sanskrit
origin with its own script,
which boasts a rich literary heritage
that Bangladesh shares with the
Indian state of West Bengal. The exact
origin of the word “Bangla”
is unknown, though it is believed to be derived from Bang, the
Dravidian-speaking tribe that settled in the area around the year 1000
BC. The
earliest literary text in Bengali is the 8th century “Charyapada”.
English
is used as second language among the middle and upper classes and in
higher
education.
