Frances is a graduate exchange scholar in the Japanese Studies Program of the Asian Studies Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, sponsored by the Japan Foundation. She is finishing her Master of Arts in History at the Ateneo de Manila University, and a research grantee of the Sumitomo Foundation. She is also a junior faculty member of the Division of Social Sciences at the University of the Philippines Visayas in Iloilo, Philippines. Her research interests are Japanese occupation, Philippine history, gender studies, and local culture.
Akeanon is spoken in the province of Aklan which is located in Western Visayas, Panay Island, Philippines. Born and raised in Ibajay, Aklan, Frances speaks and writes Akeanon fluently. She can also speak Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Cebuano, and Bisaya. Her interests in her Akeanon heritage encouraged her to work on researches about the local culture and language of the province.
