Background of the Language
Wai ma'a is a language that
is spoken in one of the Eastern districts of East Timor, Baucau. There
are about 6 villages that are inhabited by the Wai ma'a speakers in the
region. It is also called Wai mu'a, Wai moa or Wai mo'a depending on
which location you are seeing.
My Documentation goals
This work is a
continuation of the project that has previously done by a collegue,
Nelson Belo who is also a native speaker of Wai ma'a. Nelson and I are
from two different villages and we both speak Wai ma'a, exept the
difference is that my village, Bucoli, is sorrounded by all the other
Wai ma'a speaker villages but Nelson comes from a village that is
neighbored to other language speakers. As opposed to Nelson who is able
to speak three native languages, I only speak Wai ma'a because that is
the only language I was growing up speaking. There hasn't been any
standardized Wai ma'a version nor enough written documentation in the
language. As you skim through the pages, you may notice there might
have some
differences in words that Nelson and I use. Bear in mind that what I
am presenting in this project is only a different version of my own
personnal experience and knowledge in the language.
