My name is Nancy. I am working on my Master’s degree in Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. I was born and raised on the island of Oʻahu. My parents came to America in 1991 and they are both from Southern Vietnam. I have visited Vietnam six times throughout my life. Vietnam has three officially recognized dialects: Southern Vietnamese Dialect (aka Saigon Dialect), Central Vietnamese Dialect (aka Hue Dialect) and Northern Vietnamese Dialect (aka Hanoi Dialect). Because of my heritage, I grew up speaking the Saigon Dialect. In America the majority of the Vietnamese-American population are Southern Vietnamese but most of the instruction that is offered in America is taught with the Hanoi Dialect. I hope that with this contribution, many 2nd (and later) generations will have a resource that will allow them to reconnect with their heritage and (re) learn the Saigon Dialect. For people who are not of Vietnamese heritage, I also welcome you to learn more about Vietnam, its culture and its many languages and dialects.
