The Story of the Monkey and the Turtle

This is a popular story in the Philippines, told in many different variations by different people speaking different languages. The following is the story as told by Felicia M. Flores. We also give the linguistic analysis for the first episode.

Ang Istorya ni Amo kag ni Bao

Kang una nga panahon, may darwa ka mag-amigo nga sanday Amo kag si Bao. Sangka adlaw samtang nagalagaw ang darwa, may nakita sanda nga sangka puno kang saging. Hambal ni Bao, "Amigo Amo, mayad siguro dar-ün ta mag-uli ang saging kag itanüm, agüd nga kun mamunga may kan-ün kita."

"Baw, mayad gid ang napensaran mo nga ria, Amigo Bao. Hüüd, dar-ün ta ang saging. Tünga-ün, ta. Imo ang puno, akün ang sa urugbusan."

"Hüüd, migo Amo, a," sogot man ni Bao.

A long time ago, there were two friends, the Monkey and the Turtle. One day while the two of them were roaming around, they happened to see a banana tree. The Turtle said, "Friend Monkey, maybe it's good if we bring back home the banana and plant it so that if it bears fruit, we will have food to eat."
"Wow, your idea is very good, Friend Turtle! Yes, we will bring home the banana. We will split it. Yours is the tree, mine is the top."
"Yes, Friend Monkey, sure," the Turtle also agreed.

"He he he," kadlaw kag hambal ni Amo sa kaugalingün. "Wara kamaan si Bao, nga akün ginpili ang urugbusan hay mas una dya mamunga."

Nag-uli ang darwa ka mag-amigo. Kang sanda makauli rün anda gin-utod kag dayon gintanüm ang saging.

Ang ana ni Bao, gintanüm na sa rapit sa urulaan kang tubig. Hay kuon, na, "Mayad nga rugya ko itanüm sa urulaan ka tubig agüd nga pirme basa kag dali manaringsingsing."

Ang ana tana ni Amo gintanüm na sa ana darapogan. Hay, hambal na, "Rügya ko dya sa dapog itanüm, hay kun sa sagwa, indi ko malantaw. Basi takawün ka tawo ang bunga, na."

"He he he," laughed Monkey to himself. "Turtle never knew that I chose the top because I know this part will bear fruit first."
The two friends went home. When they reached home, they cut the plant in half and each planted his share.
Turtle planted his banana where water from the sink flows. He said, "This is a good place to plant, it is always wet and will easily grow."
Monkey on the other hand planted his share near the darapogan (place where food is cooked). He said to himself, "I'll plant my tree near the place darapogan, because if I plant this outside, I can't watch over it. And people might steal its fruit someday."

Naglipas ang mga inadlaw. Sakü ang lantaw ni Amo kag ni Bao kang anda nga gintanüm nga saging.

Si Bao nagapangasübü hay wara pa gid ti may nagagwa nga dahon sa ana gintanüm. Samtang si Amo nalipay gid magtürük sa ana tanüm hay may dahon rün. Ginyagota ni amo si Bao. "Baw, Migo Bao, daw indi gid mabuhi ang imo tanüm nga ria, bay. Pero, indi lang magpangasübü, taw-an ta lang ikaw kun mamunga ang akün tanüm nga dya."

"Salamat gid migo amo," ang mapainübüsun nga hambal ni Bao.

"Ha ha ha, wara gid kamaan si bao, nga hüngüd ko nga ginpili ang urogbosan ayon ka saging, hay amo dya ang una mamunga," hambal ni Amo sa ana kaugalingün.

Days passed, and Monkey and Turtle would frequently check their banana plants.
Turtle was so sad becuase the plant never grew any leaves. However Monkey was so happy as he looked at his plant, because it already has leaves. Monkey mocked Turtle. "Baw! Friend Turtle, I think your plant will never grow. But don't be sad, I'll give you some, when my plant will bear fruit."
"Thank you so much, Friend Monkey," Turtle said humbly.
"Ha, ha, ha, Turtle never knew that I intentionally chose the upper portion because I knew this will bear fruit first," Monkey told himself.

Ugaring, sa padayon nga paglipas kang mga inadlaw. Natingala si Amo nga nagaamat-amat layüng ang dahon kang ana tanüm. Samtang ang ana ni bao naga-amat amat ka panaringsing.

Hasta nga nagpamunga ang tanüm ni bao, kag ang ana ni Amo naubos ka laya.

Tuman gid ang kasübü ni Amo. Hambal ni Amo, "Ano abi, hay gusto ko ang dasig mamunga, mong. Abi ko dasig mamunga ang may ugbus. Indi gali. Kinahanglan gali ang may gamut."

Samtang, nalipay gid si Bao sa pagpamunga kang ana saging. Kag gintaw-an na kang saging si Amo bilang pagdümdüm kag pagpasalamat.

However, as days passed, Monkey was bewildered when he saw his plant wilting. However, Turtle's plant was beginning to grow.
All the way until Turtle's plant bore fruit, and Monkey's plant was all rotten.
Monkey was so sad. And he said, "It's all because I wanted a plant that will bear fruit fast. I thought the upper part of the plant will bear fruit faster. I was wrong. Roots are important."
Meanwhile, Turtle was so happy when his banana bore fruits. He gave Monkey some bananas, as his expression of gratitude.
