About Me and Duri Language

Hi, my name is Agus. I am a PhD student in Political Science at UH Manoa. To be frank, Duri is not my ethnicity nor my language. I am actually Bugis and was born in Soppeng, Indonesia. This project of documenting Duri language is dedicated to my dear wife who speaks Duri and has helped me to do this project by providing information and support. At home, we speak three languages: Bugis, Duri, and Bahasa Indonesia as the media of communication of the family. We worry about the sustainability of the Duri language as the young generation, including my child, might be unable to actively use their ancestral language. The Language Documentation Training Center, therefore, is a valuable program in preserving such dying languages. Thanks to UH LDTC and all the wonderful mentors I am working with.

Background of the Language

The Duri language is a member of the Massenrepulu language family and commonly spoken in nothern part of the Enrekang district of South Sulawesi. People there refer to their area as the 'Duri complex' in order to differentiate it from Toraja and other neighboring areas. Duri is spoken by about 95.000 of the inhabitants of the Enrekang district, as well as other Duri people who are scattered throughout the archipelago. Duri is considerably smaller than other local languages in the region such as Bugis (3.5 million speakers) and Toraja (500,000 speakers). The number of monolingual speakers is decreasing as many young Duri start speaking other local languages in addition to Bahasa Indonesia (the national language). Duri is also often considered an informal language, as it is used only at home. For formal occasions, such as events in schools and work places, Duri people are inclined to use Bahasa Indonesia. Moreover, local curriculum in this area requires elementary school students to learn Bugis instead of the Duri language.

My Documentation goals:
  • To preserve the Duri language
  • To introduce the Duri language to the world
  • To encourage young Duri people to speak and love their ancestral language
